January/February 2000

Welcome To Our New Brandon Area Members!

It is with great regret that we note the dissolution of the Brandon/Westman Ostomy Association, effective January 1, 2000. This group had been in operation for nearly twenty five years and had been of great service to ostomates in the Brandon region.

Don and Maxine Rose along with many other dynamic individuals have maintained an excellent level of service in the Brandon area. But due to a financial shortfall and a lack of members willing to be active in the organization, they had no choice but to disband the chapter.

They held regular monthly meetings, had dinners and parties and ran a visiting program. Maxine Rose's newsletter, the Brandon Oz-Tummy News, kept their membership well informed of events as well as supplied a great deal of useful information of interest to ostomates.

The Brandon Ostomy Clinic will still be held on the second Wednesday of each month and area residents will still have access to the VON E.T.s.

We welcome their members into our group and hope that we can be of service. In the past, we have worked with the Brandon/Westman Chapter in lobbying the Provincial government to initiate and maintain the Manitoba Ostomy Program. We were very grateful for their help and support. We will continue to work with Brandon area ostomates in the future and hopefully a satellite chapter of the WOA can eventually be established in Brandon. This would allow a Brandon based group to function without the work and expenses of running a complete United Ostomy Association of Canada chapter. Executive, financial, newsletter and other functions could be run from Winnipeg and the Satellite Chapter could concentrate on meetings, visitations and regional issues.

At their final meeting, the Brandon/Westman Chapter decided to split their assets between the Winnipeg Ostomy Association and the Brandon Branch of the Canadian Cancer Society. The WOA would like to thank them for the donation.

In closing, a quote from the Brandon Oz-Tummy News:

"Always remember:
An Ostomy in not an Illness. . .
It is a cure for an illness you used to have!!!!"

This is the attitude that the Brandon/Westman Ostomy Association approached ostomy surgery with, and we commend them for it, and for the years of service they gave to their community!
