From The President's Desk

HAPPY NEW YEAR! Well the weather is certainly keeping us all on our toes these days. Getting dumped on with 30 centimeters of snow one day and then melting temperatures of 5C three days later is a really crazy situation for us Manitobans who like to boast about our cold frigid snow filled winters. Our next Chapter meeting is January 24, 2007 weather permitting. A voice message will be posted on our telephone number, 237-2022, the day of the meeting IF we are cancelling due to the inclement weather. Remember also, that we meet on the FOURTH Wednesday of the month.

I am so pleased to report that our Christmas Party brought out 60 + members who were in a party mood. It was especially exciting to greet prospective members who joined us this afternoon. We're looking forward to welcoming you at our Chapter meetings and getting to know you better.

Speaking of World Ostomy Day again, we prepared a scrapbook of pictures of our BBQ that were taken by Chapter members and sent it off to Sheelah Zapf for judging in a national and international competition. It seems that we've done quite well in our endeavours for this event. So watch for the results of this competition in future newsletters.

Pat Cimmeck, Co-ordinator of the UOAC Youth Camp has announced that the camp dates for this year are July 2 - 8, 2007. Registration fee is $500.00. If anyone knows of a child that might like to attend this camp, please contact your E.T. or one of the WOA Executive as this camp fills quickly and we must request an application form by March 31, 2007. Thanks to the "Mile of Pennies", the WOA Chapter is in the position of being able to assist in some of the costs of sending a child or two to camp.

We need to fill two positions in our Chapter. We are looking for a Spouse and Significant Other (SASO) representative to be a liaison between the Chapter and the National. As well, the secretary's position has just become vacant. If any of you would like to become part of a great team or know of someone who would fit the role, please contact one of the Executive for more information.

Along with other Chapter activities, we are planning a Spring Visitor Training session. The Visitor is the most important part of our organization. We are always looking for new people to take on this training as it is important to match the patient with a visitor who is the same gender, had the same surgery, and is close in age. It is also important that the visitor be a member of the WOA, attends meetings to keep up with the changes and offers a positive outlook. If we haven't approached you and you think you would like to try this, please get in touch with me so that we can include you in the plans.

You should have received the most recent issue of Ostomy Canada magazine and I recommend its reading to you. Now I will let you get on to the very interesting articles in our own newsletter.

Regards,
Lorrie
