The Unsung Hero Award

The Unsung Hero Award is presented annually by the United Ostomy Association of Canada to chapter members who have worked behind the scenes in support of their chapter and its members in various areas but have largely been unrecognized for their efforts. For the past 10 years the awards have been presented at the Annual Conference of UOAC. At the 2008 Conference in Hamilton one such recipient was Mike Leverick of the Winnipeg Chapter.

Mike has been a chapter member for nearly 30 years, active and certified visitor for over 20 years, was Newsletter Editor for 10 years and was a Vice President for 3 years. Throughout the nineties he was very much involved with a chapter committee that worked with the provincial government to maintain the Manitoba Ostomy Program as we know it today.

In August of 1995 Mike launched a Website dedicated solely to ostomy affairs. The Website of The Winnipeg Ostomy Association is generally acknowledged as the first such website worldwide. As our Webmaster, he has maintained and fine-tuned that website for over 13 years, chock full of information for ostomates around the world.

While Mike was unable to be at the conference in Hamilton to receive the award, it did finally catch up to him, as Evelyn Waldera brought it back to Winnipeg and presented it to Mike at the WOA Christmas Party at the end of November..
