19 Years and Going Strong

By Stuart Schaffer,
Webmaster, International Ostomy Association

It has now been 19 years as of this month since my life has changed with the Ileostomy surgery. I had suffered with Ulcerative Colitis for many years. Wow! Where has all the time gone? I have never regretted having this done. I am healthier now then I have ever been in years. In the past I have been asked "Do I have any hard feeling because I ended up with an Ostomy?" My answer of course is no. The only regret I have is that I waited so long before having the surgery done. I always keep in the back of my mind, what if I had not had this surgery done? That is a question I do not care to answer.

Since the surgery I have lead a normal life. Now nineteen years later I am going stronger then ever. Never have had any real problems with any foods. I am into golf, swimming, working out, and playing volleyball. I have ridden horses, gone hiking and traveled across the country, including Canada and over to Europe a number of times. Oh yes I still work as a freelance photographer which could take me anywhere with the drop of a hat. In the summer months you will find me in Gulf of Mexico photographing national sailing races or even serving as crew racing them. Or you just may find me on the beaches covering major volleyball tournaments. I also still work as an Internet consultant with clients across the world. Next month I will turn 57 and I am still looking for my next adventure. The doctor tells me I am as healthy as a twenty year old except that I have an Ileostomy. However that is no problem because the Ostomy has never stopped me from doing anything I care to do. It just happens to come along.
