SASO

An ostomy in the family is a life - changing circumstance for family members as well as the ostomate. As we all know, the support and encouragement of spouses and other family members is important to the adjustment and well - being of the ostomate. But we family members have our own needs for support as well. The recognition of our needs (not least by ourselves) and having them met directly affects our ability to support our loved one as well as our own well - being.

Spouses and Significant Others (SASO) activities address the needs of and offer support to spouses, significant others, families and friends of persons with an ostomy. Rap sessions and socializing at our UOAC chapter meetings are one way in which we provide mutual recognition and support. Sometimes not a lot needs to be said and it is enough just to "be there" in the company of others who are in the same boat. We can potentially do much more, such as offering help and support to those who request it through the visitor program. I hope that the numbers of us SASOs who participate in UOAC activities will continue to grow and that we will increasingly be able to contribute to the adjustment and continuing well - being of ostomates and their families.
