WOA's Wine & Cheese Wind-Up May 2008

What a turnout we had this year! We had set up expecting 60. We ran around finding more seating spaces for everyone as we had close to 70 in the end. We were especially happy to welcome members who travelled in from Killarney and a few new ostomates and their spouses.

We had a special presentation for Gay Hordienko RN, BN, ET who has retired after many years serving the ostomy patients of Manitoba. Dave Page had sent a list of her extensive accomplishments over the years which was read out by Lorrie Pismenny. Barry Cox spoke on behalf of the members who had been touched by Gay's compassion and caring. Barry presented Gay with a "Certificate of Appreciation" along with a card and a gift. Gay thanked everyone as she accepted the tribute and spoke fondly about her love of her job and working with all the patients. Her friends, Mary Robertson ET and Bonita Yarjou ET were there as well as we wished Gay best wishes in her new ‘career'. Members had responded overwhelmingly to our request for items for our cold buffet table so everyone had ample to choose from. There was great conversation and much laughter as they lined up to fill their plates. We then had SASO member, Nurit Drory and her daughter Cheryl Kives read selections from Nurit's published book "Dressed in Full Smiles" and the mother & daughter duo finished off by singing 3 parodies also found in Nurit's book. A small token of appreciation was given to Nurit and her husband, Sam Knacker for their constant willingness to add to our pleasure by entertaining us through humour and music.

Zerlina Zamnuik and her cohorts, Maureen Pendergast & Henry Wiebe, did a splendid job on our silent auction by running it with humour and speed. Once again the members provided a great assortment of items that caught the attention of those looking for a fun item. The crew of Alison, Jan, Evelyn, Barb, Joe & Vicky, Marjorie & Trish and others did a superb job of putting out the food and the clean up afterwards. Roger manned the ticket table, Nick looked after sign in. Laurette & Michel took oodles of pictures for posterity. Thanks go to all the other unnamed members working behind the scenes to help make this a very successful event. Door prizes of baseball tickets, circus tickets and centerpieces finished the evening off.

Door prizes of baseball tickets, circus tickets and centerpieces finished the evening off. A lot of fun and socializing took place in just a couple of hours.

What a great start to our summer!
