Visitor Training

This year our volunteer training session is being held at the St. Boniface Hospital, 409 Tache Avenue, Winnipeg. The room AG002-1 is at the back of the cafeteria, which is located in the basement. Registration is from 08:30 – 09:00 on Saturday October 26th, 2002. ConvaTec will provide lunch and the session should be over by approximately 2:30 pm.

The goal of the Winnipeg Ostomy Association’s Visiting Program is to make available to every ostomate a qualified visitor capable of offering reassurance, understanding, and practical information and to help the ostomate renew his/her self-confidence.

Your commitment includes: an initial training session, an annual membership fee of $30.00 to the Winnipeg Ostomy Association, attending three chapter meetings per year and a recertification session every three years. Visitors make an average of three visits per year. Visits can be pre or post operative, in the hospital, home, mutually agreed upon meeting place or a phone call. Your name will be forwarded to the United Ostomy Association of Canada office if the Certification Panel feels you should be certified at this time.

We hope you will take this opportunity to come out and learn more about this most rewarding pursuit. If you know of other ostomates that might be interested in becoming a visitor please encourage them to come out as well.

The day will include:
  1. Introduction to the Winnipeg Ostomy Association by Dave Page -President WOA
  2. Guidelines and objectives of the Visiting Program
  3. Communication and visiting strategies
  4. Anatomy and physiology of ostomy and related surgery
  5. Closing Remarks
Please call me to pre-register by October 20th, 2002 at 632-2930 or if you have any questions. I look forward to meeting you.

Sincerely,
Elaine Beyer
Visiting Chairperson
