News and Views of Moncton Conference

by Ursula Keleman

This year's national conference was held in Moncton, N.B. Wednesday evening's Meet and Greet featured a hot and cold buffet with quiche, meatballs and of course the traditional mussels. During the course of the evening a band played some good Maritime tunes. Some brave souls even took to the dance floor to kick up their heels. Thursday morning began with the opening ceremonies and the introduction of the conference co-chairs and other dignitaries. The highlight of the morning however was the inspiring story of a young woman who overcame numerous medical obstacles at a very young age and still managed to maintain a full and healthy life. The afternoon was spent at the Rocks (created by the clash of continents, carved by melting glaciers, and then sculpted by the highest tide in the world) and concluded with a lobster dinner. Later on in the evening we were introduced to the Corporate Image Video followed by a wine and cheese reception.

Friday's agenda included a talk on Capsule endoscopy. The SASO event scheduled earlier in the day included a tour of the Moncton Museum whereby one could view a number of exhibits ranging from railroad artifacts to early Acadian settlement. At noon the exhibit hall was open, lunch was served and then the serious business of auctioning off the various donated items commenced. The evening's banquet hosted by ConvaTec had everyone feasting on creamed squash soup, followed by a roast beef dinner. The special guest speaker was Ron Hill who gave a slide presentation of his athletic accomplishments among them being mountain climbing. To put the finishing touches on an already wonderful evening we were all treated to the talents of a very tricky magician.

The last day of the conference included rap sessions and the Bertha S. Okun Lectureship. The farewell banquet sponsored by Hollister had everyone enjoying Supreme Breast of Chicken and concluded with a decadent desert of warm chocolate cake. Jimmy the Janitor kept everyone rolling in their seats with his maritime humor. The evening ended with the passing of the banner to the next host city Calgary. Hope to see you there.
