District Support Services Workshop
by Rosemary Gaffray
This workshop was presented in order to give Chapters some suggestions and new ideas to help their Chapter grow and thrive. These are some of the ideas that I found valuable.
- Communicating with the Medical Profession. Usually the President (but not always). Contact person should be pleasant, dignified and professional. Important - be sure to get contact information before ending conversation and plan to do a follow up call at a time shortly after the initial contact. Do not wait for the medical person to contact you as they can be very busy and don’t get around to it.
- Newsletters should be sent out to a) Public Health nurses; b) VON; c) Crohn’s & Colitis; d) ETs.
- Show appreciation to ETs and suppliers eg: luncheon.
- Recruiting Member Participation: It is suggested that you look for members who are committed, relatively healthy, have positive attitudes, knowledgeable, an idea person and of course willing to participate. It is important to try to fit the person with the job taking into consideration the skills they might need and the skills they have.
- Apprentice Opportunities: Have a session on the duties of the different positions on the Executive of your Chapter. Invite potential people to observe an Executive meeting.
- Develop a program committee: Find non-labour intensive events for fundraising such as baking bees, meat sales, collecting pop cans, etc.
