SASO General Meeting, Friday August 17, 2007

There are 24 SASO Chapter representatives across Canada. The SASO committee is comprised of one chairperson and two members. Currently the committee has one vacancy. SASO news is published three times a year. It was noted that a local chapter’s board of directors or executive be kept informed of the SASO Support Group activities as SASO is not an independent autonomous group. The meeting generated a number of questions regarding the function of the SASO support Group representative. In response a number of suggestions were put forth - to meet and greet the spouses, partners of family members of the new ostomates at chapter meetings. In addition to have available the SASO pamphlet (available through the UOAC National Office at no cost). The general theme throughout the meeting was providing support and guidance for the caregiver and attempting to meet their needs. This could be done in a number of ways - learning from each other’s experiences, discussion groups and in other cases just partaking in an agreed upon social activity to relieve any stress. In conclusion the meeting provided some helpful directives in the needs and functions of a support group for spouses, significant others, family and friends of ostomates.
