Emptying an Ostomy Pouch at Home

Contributed by WOA member Ion Parrish

Since I became an urostomate, I have found that emptying my pouch can be very messy if I do not sit down to do it. If I stand to do it, the urine splashes back up and all over the rim of the toilet.

At home, I have made a transfer station that is made up of the extra tubing we get from supplies. I take off the male connector and put that end under the back of the toilet seat so that it stays in place. (The male connector is pushed into the Hollister Tube). The tubing is then attached to the side of the vanity and the top of the tubing is Velcroed to the wall. When I need to empty my pouch, I attach the top end of the tubing to the pouch and open the valve. The urine flows gently into the toilet. When I am finished I then put the top end of the tube under the water tap and rinse out the tube.
