From The President's Desk

In my article in the September newsletter, I wrote that United Ostomy Association of Canada President Les Kehoe had been unable to attend at the National Conference in August because of health problems. That article was written in late August and at the time I did not realize that Les had suffered a heart attack. I am sure all of you will join me in wishing Les well in his recovery. Les has resigned his position as President and been replaced by Vice-President Lorne Aronson. At the September Chapter meeting, those present signed a get well card for Les and a letter of support for our new national president Lorne Aronson.

OFFICE
The Winnipeg Ostomy Association has been a member of the SMD Self-Help Clearinghouse for about a year-and-a-half.During that time, our office has been in temporary quarters. In October, space became available for us to move into our new office and that move is now complete. Using money that was raised at our bingo functions, we have purchased a desk, table and a new office chair to equip the office properly. Special thanks must be given to our 1st Vice President Helmut Friesen for assembling the various pieces of office furniture. Great work, Helmut.

CHRISTMAS PARTY
Elsewhere in this newsletter, you'll find notice of our Christmas party. This year we will honor Yvonne LeDoyen E.T. who retired this past July after 35 years as a nurse, the past 15 years as an Enterostomal Therapist. I urge as many of you as possible to join us as we say thank you to Yvonne and wish her well in her retirement. Please note that the Chapter meeting scheduled for November 28th, 2001 is cancelled. Our next Chapter meeting will be held on 23 January, 2002.

FINANCIAL SITUATION
Every year for past several years it has been necessary for us to dip in to our term deposit in order to meet our expenses. To this point we have not done so this year, and now we find that the bank balance in our General Account is almost non-existent. Membership renewals will shortly be coming in but probably not in time to cover expected expenses. At the executive meeting on November 8th, we had to consider the possibility of once again transferring funds from the term deposit to the General Account. It is necessary for us to consider some type of fund raising. The executive would appreciate some ideas in this area. So please do let us know of any successful fund-raising activities which might be appropriate for us to use. That is it for now. See you at the Christmas party on December 2nd.

Dave
